Always Learning Newsletter - February 2020

Greetings From Epiphany!

Dear Friends,

Please join Boston Medical Center’s HealthNet Plan and hundreds and hundreds of others in support this year’s gala. If you haven’t already gotten involved, here’s a link where you can do just that: Gala. Hopefully, you can be with us in person on April 17th to cheer on the students, but if not please consider buying tickets for parents and students. The party promises to be a HUGE shot-in-the-arm for the students, and generous friends like you make it possible. God bless you, and thank you for all you do to help these beautiful children.

  Your Grateful Fan,

Corporate Partner Spotlight: Boston Medical Center HealthNet Plan

This month's corporate partner spotlight is on….BMC HealthNet Plan!

BMC HealthNet Plan has been an instrumental partner in our work. They’ve supported Epiphany in a variety of ways, from volunteering in our gardens to preparing dinner for our students. They have participated in our annual Career Day and been generous sponsors of our annual spring gala. In addition, they recently helped us establish a partnership with The Guild, a social enterprise and development ecosystem — owned and led by people of color. Since October 2019, through the Guild our students have the opportunity to take a yoga class every Monday. This experience has helped to center our students and teach them the values of mindfulness and self-care

Our work is possible because of investment and support of our partners. Thank you BMC HealthNet Plan for all you do for the Epiphany School Community!

Epiphany Stars: Graduate Profile

Jason Brice ‘10

This month’s Epiphany star goes to...Jason Brice! Jason graduated from Epiphany School in 2010 and attended Prospect Hill Academy Charter School. At Epiphany, Jason was a smart student but didn’t always push himself to his fullest potential. Jason remembers Mr. Penney, Mr. Jones, and Mr. Forrest keeping him accountable and checking in on him throughout his journey as a middle schooler. He is grateful for the moments he had with them because they took the time to process things with him instead of just yelling at him.

In high school, Jason took a coding elective and quickly this helped him to discover his love for learning. Now he is finishing college at UMASS Dartmouth where he majors in electrical engineering. He recalls that electrical engineering felt like second nature to him, “It was easy, and I understood everything. I also loved that it included hands-on activities.”.

He is currently interning at UMASS Medical School, where he is learning about 3D printing and prototypes. One of his long-term goal is to work for Raytheon as an electrical engineer to help advance the field.

We are proud Jason is exploring his passion. Jason is this month’s Epiphany Star, and we love having him as part of our community!

Learning is Cool: Epiphany Curriculum Highlights

6th & 7th Grade on a trip to the MFA

Thanks to Makeeba McCreary, on January 16th, our 6th and 7th graders took a trip to the Museum of Fine Art to see the Nubian Exhibit. The exhibit complemented what students were learning in the classroom. The 6th graders were reading about pyramids and tombs as part of their Egyptian unit, and the 7th graders were in the middle of their Colonial Africa Unit and able to explore artifacts and primary sources related to what they covered in class. This trip was a great way to bring classroom learning and conversations to life.

Our Toddlers Love the Greenhouse!

We are so excited about the new elements in our greenhouse!  We now have raised beds growing vegetables and herbs, as well as a calming water feature. Our middle schoolers and toddlers take daily trips there to explore new plants and work on special projects. Here are a few pictures of our toddlers tasting kumquats for the first time. Some loved it…others, not so much.

Graduate Reunion

On Friday, January 10, our Graduate Support Program hosted its annual reunion at Bella Luna Restaurant. Over 50 graduates from classes 2001 to 2015 joined the celebration. It was great to see so many of them and catch up.

Rian Toussaint, An Epiphany Star!

Check out our graduate, Rian Toussaint, a freshman at Morehouse College, in an interview on the local Atlanta TV station talking about helping to start a polo team.
